Adding years to your life and life to your years
The idea is to live your life in a state of mental, physical and social well-being for a long as possible. People are often living over 20 years longer than previous generations. Make sure you are one of those with a longer life. And, make sure these are in a state of well-being.
So, how do you make sure you are one of those who experience healthy aging?
Living55Plus is Going to Portugal to Find Out How
In 2012 the European Union launched the European Partnership for Active and Healthy Aging. Shortly after, Ageing@Coimbra became one of 32 Reference Sites. The goal – to develop, implement and share ways to improve the lives and lifespans of citizens.
This is not some academic exercise! The goal of the partnership and ageing@coimbra consortium is to raise the healthy life expectancy of the regional citizens by two years by 2020.
Think about it! This a short period of time to achieve such a goal. It is unlikely that they will cure cancer, end heart disease or diabetes in such a short period of time. So what are they doing?
They focus on five points of action:
Adherence to therapy
- Fall prevention
- Fragility prevention
- Remote health monitoring
- Elderly-friendly services
As we have reported on this site, these areas promote well-being and can extend life. Our question is, what are they doing? How are they getting people engaged?
On April 24th we have a meeting with Joao Malva, the director of the Ageing@coimbra program and will be probing to get answers.
